Home remedies for hair fall: scalp care, oils, onion juice and yoga, rated by the evidence

Short answer

The home remedies for hair fall with the clearest support are gentle washing with conditioner, loose hairstyles, less heat, enough protein and iron, and no crash diets. Oils, onion juice and rosemary have only small studies, and no trial shows yoga regrows hair. Home care cannot reverse inherited thinning, so see a doctor if shedding persists.

A wide-tooth comb, a small bowl of oil with a drop above it and a folded towel

Hair on the pillow, in the comb and around the drain sends most of us looking for home remedies for hair fall, or typing “baal jhadna kaise roke” late at night. Some home care genuinely helps, some is harmless habit, and some delays the check that would find the real cause.

For the causes, tests and medical treatment of every type of hair loss, see our complete guide to hair loss in India.

Hair fall treatment at home starts with knowing the type

Losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal, according to the UK National Health Service (NHS). Home care can only fix what home habits caused. The same oil or diet cannot help both a shedding phase after fever and inherited thinning, so start by matching what you see to its likely type.

What you noticeLikely typeCan home care fix it?
Sudden shedding all over, two to three months after a fever, delivery, surgery or crash dietTemporary shedding (telogen effluvium)It settles by itself; good food and patience help
Short broken hairs with no white bulb at the end, rough or dry endsBreakage from heat, chemicals or rough handlingYes, mostly: gentler washing, drying and styling
Thinning along the hairline or where hair is pulled tightTraction alopecia, from tight hairstylesYes, if caught early: loosen the style
Slow recession at the temples or crown, or a widening partingPattern hair loss, which runs in familiesNo: home care cannot reverse it; a doctor can discuss treatment
Round, smooth bald patchesAlopecia areata, an immune conditionNo: see a doctor within days to weeks
Shedding with tiredness, paleness, heavy periods or weight changePossible low iron or thyroid diseaseNo: it needs a blood test and treatment

Our guide to the reasons for hair fall covers each cause and its clues in more detail.

Hair fall control home remedies for your scalp, washing and hairstyles

These are the steps with the clearest backing, because the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends them to its own patients with hair loss. They protect the hair you have; they do not regrow hair a medical cause has taken.

  • Wash with a gentle shampoo, then condition every time. AAD says hair that is thinning is fragile, and conditioner coats the strands, which reduces breakage and split ends. Washing does not cause hair fall; the hairs in the drain had already loosened.
  • Pat dry, do not rub. Wrap hair in a soft towel and let it air dry where you can. If you use a dryer, use its lowest heat.
  • Comb gently. AAD warns that 100 brush strokes a day can cause split ends. Use a wide-tooth comb and brush only enough to style.
  • Loosen tight hairstyles. Tight plaits, buns, ponytails, extensions and rollers worn to bed pull on follicles. Over time this traction alopecia can become permanent. Pain, stinging or crusts on the scalp are signs to loosen the style at once.
  • Cover hair loosely. AAD notes that the constant rubbing of a cap, dupatta or scarf over hair pulled back tightly can also cause traction loss. Pull hair back loosely underneath; silk or satin is gentler.
  • Cut back on heat and chemicals. Save straighteners and curling irons for special occasions, and have colouring, rebonding or perming done at a salon, not at home.
  • Notice twisting or pulling. Twisting hair around a finger weakens it. If you pull hair out when stressed and cannot stop, a mental-health professional can help.

Home remedies for hair fall: oils, onion juice and rosemary, rated

None of these is among the treatments AAD or NHS describe, and none corrects low iron, thyroid disease or inherited thinning. Here is what the best study we could find for each one actually tested.

RemedyBest evidence we foundOur verdict
Coconut oilA 2003 laboratory study on cut hair samples, by researchers at Marico, a hair-oil company: coconut oil reduced protein loss during combing; sunflower and mineral oil did notMay reduce breakage. It was not tested on hair fall from the root
Onion juiceA 2002 Iraqi trial in 38 people with patchy alopecia areata: regrowth in 20 of 23 using onion juice by six weeks, against 2 of 15 using tap water by eight weeksOne small study, in a different condition. Alopecia areata patches often regrow on their own, and onion can irritate the skin
Rosemary oilA 2015 Iranian trial in 100 young men with pattern hair loss: a standardised rosemary lotion and a 2% scalp medicine both raised hair counts at six months, with no significant differenceInteresting, not proven. There was no placebo group, and the lotion was a product, not kitchen rosemary water
Scalp massageA 2016 Japanese study in 9 men without hair loss: 4 minutes a day with a massage device for 24 weeks; hairs got slightly thicker, but not significantly more than on the unmassaged sidePleasant and harmless; not shown to stop hair fall
Amla, bhringraj, curry leaves, rice water, egg or curd masksWe found no controlled trial in people with hair fallFine as a habit if your scalp tolerates them; do not rely on them

If you like oiling

Keep oiling if you enjoy it. Do not heat the oil first; AAD advises people with hair loss to skip hot-oil treatments, because heat damages fragile hair. After oiling, leave hair loose rather than pulling it into a tight plait. Patch-test onion juice or any new essential oil on a small area first, and stop if your scalp itches, burns or turns red.

A remedy that seems to work may just be time. Shedding after illness or delivery usually settles within months whatever you apply, which is why “it worked for my cousin” is weak evidence.

Food, stress and sleep: the home remedies inside your body

Hair is built from protein, and low iron is a common, fixable cause of shedding in Indian women. Eat protein at every meal and get iron checked before taking supplements; our guide to foods for hair fall turns this into an Indian thali.

Crash diets are a well-known trigger: AAD lists losing 20 pounds (about 9 kg) or more among the causes of heavy shedding a few months later. Lose weight slowly if you need to.

A major stressful event can trigger shedding months later, and AAD says constant stress can keep it going. You cannot remove every source of stress, but regular sleep, daily movement and someone to talk to make it easier to carry. Our guide to hair fall after fever or illness explains why this shedding comes late and how long it lasts.

Yoga for hair loss: what the evidence says

We found no clinical trial showing that yoga, a particular asana or pranayama stops hair fall or regrows hair. That includes the popular practice of rubbing the fingernails together. Videos promising that a few poses will reverse baldness are not backed by any study we could find.

Yoga still has a place. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) summarises studies in which yoga helped people manage stress and sleep better. Since stress can trigger or prolong shedding, yoga is a sensible part of a calmer routine. Think of it as care for the stress around hair fall, not as a hair treatment.

If you are new to yoga, NCCIH advises avoiding extreme practices such as headstands, shoulder stands and forceful breathing. Learn from a trained teacher, and tell them about any health condition.

What home care cannot do, and how long to try

Home care cannot reverse inherited pattern hair loss, regrow hair from scarred follicles, treat alopecia areata or correct thyroid disease. NHS advises seeing a doctor about the cause before paying a commercial hair clinic, and says no treatment is 100% effective. For pattern hair loss, a doctor may discuss a scalp medicine, tablets that block a hormone’s effect on follicles, or other options.

Give gentle care two to three months, the time it takes to see a change in shedding. If hair fall is no better by then, if you see patches or a widening parting, or if you feel unwell, get it checked. Our guide to blood tests for hair fall explains which tests are worth doing, and stages of hair loss shows how doctors grade thinning.

How Disha can help

Disha is an AI health coach that chats and calls in Hindi, English and Hinglish. It can help you eat enough protein and iron from familiar food, avoid crash dieting, and keep up sleep, movement and stress routines while you wait for hair to recover. It does not diagnose hair loss, interpret tests, prescribe or provide emergency care, and it does not replace your doctor. Read how Disha coaching works.

This is not medical advice. This page is general education for adults (18+), not a diagnosis or treatment plan. Hair loss in children needs a doctor’s check. Frequently asked questions

What is the best home remedy for hair fall?

There is no single best remedy, because hair fall has different causes. The steps with the clearest support are gentle washing with conditioner, loose hairstyles, less heat, enough protein and iron, and no crash diets. Oils and onion juice have only small studies behind them. If shedding has not settled in two to three months, or you see patches, ask a doctor to find the cause.

How can I stop hair fall at home (“baal jhadne se kaise roke”)?

First work out the likely type. Breakage and hair loss from tight hairstyles improve with gentler care and looser styles. Shedding after fever, delivery or a crash diet usually stops on its own within months, helped by regular meals with protein. Inherited thinning, round patches and hair fall with other symptoms need a doctor, because no home remedy can treat them.

Does onion juice stop hair fall?

The evidence is thin. The main study, from 2002, tested crude onion juice in 38 people with patchy alopecia areata and found more regrowth than with tap water. That condition often regrows by itself, the study was small, and it did not test ordinary hair fall or pattern thinning. Onion juice can irritate the skin, so patch-test first and stop if your scalp reacts.

Is rosemary oil as good as hair-loss medicine?

One 2015 trial in 100 young men found that a standardised rosemary lotion and a 2% scalp medicine raised hair counts similarly over six months. It had no placebo group, so it cannot show how much either did beyond time, and it has not been repeated. Treat rosemary oil as an unproven option, and do not drop a treatment your doctor prescribed in favour of it.

Does oiling hair reduce hair fall?

Oiling can make hair softer, and a laboratory study found coconut oil reduced protein loss from combed hair, which may mean less breakage. We found no trial showing that oil reduces hair falling from the root. If you enjoy oiling, keep it up, but skip heating the oil, and leave hair loose afterwards instead of tying a tight plait.

Can yoga or pranayama regrow hair?

We found no clinical trial showing that yoga, pranayama or rubbing your nails together regrows hair or stops hair fall. Yoga has been shown to help many people manage stress and sleep, and stress can trigger or prolong shedding, so it can be a useful part of your routine. If you are a beginner, avoid headstands and forceful breathing, and learn from a trained teacher.

How long should I try home remedies before seeing a doctor?

Give gentle care about two to three months, since that is roughly how long a change in shedding takes to show. See a doctor sooner if you notice round bald patches, scalp pain or scaling, a widening parting, or symptoms such as tiredness, paleness or irregular periods. Shedding after illness that lasts beyond six months also needs a check.
