Searches like “ling badhane wali dava” lead to tablets, oils and desi nuskhe promising a bigger penis in weeks. None of them has been shown to work for penis enlargement.

What is a normal penis size?
The largest review pooled measurements of up to 15,521 men, taken by health professionals rather than self-reported. The averages were:
| Measurement | Average | Number of men measured |
|---|---|---|
| Length, soft (flaccid) | 9.16 cm | 10,704 |
| Length, soft and gently stretched | 13.24 cm | 14,160 |
| Length, erect | 13.12 cm | 692 |
| Girth (circumference), soft | 9.31 cm | 9,407 |
| Girth, erect | 11.66 cm | 381 |
So the average erect penis is about 13 cm (just over 5 inches), smaller than what pornography suggests. Height was only weakly linked to length. We found no comparable large study of adult Indian men.
A soft penis also changes size with cold, stress and arousal, and looks shorter from above than it does to anyone else. Soft length is a poor guide to erect length.
Why no penis enlargement medicine, oil or nuskha works
Penis size is set during development, mainly before and during puberty. In adults, there is no known medicine that grows it permanently. Indian rules agree: the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules list “improvement in size and shape of the sexual organ” among claims no medicine may make.
Tablets, capsules and desi dava
We found no clinical trial showing that any tablet or Ayurvedic medicine increases adult penis size. Some products do something else instead. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that many sexual-enhancement pills are likely to contain dangerous hidden ingredients. At a South Indian hospital, doctors found an undeclared pharmaceutical drug in 27.7% of the alternative-medicine products taken by patients who had fallen ill. A hidden erection drug can make a penis look fuller for a few hours, which is not growth and can be risky for men with heart disease. Our review of desi medicine for timing and sex power explains the hidden drugs and heavy metals found in herbal products.
Home remedies, oils and creams
Massage oils, creams and gels cannot reach or change the tissue that sets size. Rubbing may cause temporary swelling or irritation. Some oils and “Ayurvedic” pastes can burn or cause allergic rashes on thin genital skin. If a product claims to make your penis bigger, the claim itself is a warning sign.
What actually changes how it looks
- Losing belly fat. A pad of fat sits above the penis, and doctors press it down when measuring because it hides part of the shaft. With obesity, fat can almost completely bury the penis. In a European series of 204 men who needed surgery for a buried penis, obesity was the leading cause, in 45.1%. Losing weight reduces this pad, though an established buried penis may also need medical care. Check your weight with the Asian cut-offs on our body mass index (BMI) calculator.
- Firmer erections. A penis only reaches its full erect length with a firm erection. Sleep, exercise, stopping smoking, less alcohol and good blood sugar all protect erections.
- Grooming. Trimming pubic hair can make more of the shaft visible. It changes appearance, not size.
Pumps, traction devices, fillers and surgery
- Vacuum pumps. In a study of 37 men who used a pump three times a week for 6 months, average stretched length went from 7.6 cm to 7.9 cm, which was not a significant change; 30% were satisfied. Pumps can help erections in some men, but they do not lengthen the penis.
- Traction devices (extenders). In a study of 23 men without a control group, wearing an extender for up to 9 hours a day for 3 months raised average soft length from 8.8 cm to 10.5 cm and stretched length from 11.5 cm to 13.2 cm. The gain is modest, the study was small, and very few men can wear a device that long.
- Fillers and fat injections. The American Urological Association (AUA) says fat injection to increase girth has not been shown to be safe or effective. Permanent fillers and self-injected substances can cause lumps, infection and tissue death that need major surgery.
- Surgery. The AUA says cutting the ligament that holds the penis up, to add length, has not been shown to be safe or effective. A 2026 review of 23 studies covering 2,620 men found complications in 14.9% of augmentation procedures.
Size anxiety: when worry is the real problem
Many men who are sure they are small are not. In a study of 100 men with “small penis anxiety”, their average soft length was 9.33 cm, in the normal range, and anxiety scores fell after they were shown their erect measurements. Comparing yourself with pornography or with how other men look in a changing room gives a false picture.
If worry about size is constant, stops you from dating or having sex, or leads you to check and measure again and again, it deserves help in its own right. A psychiatrist or psychologist can help. If pornography shapes how you see your body, our guide to porn addiction may also help.
Erection strength matters more than size
Many searches about size are really about strength: a penis that feels small because erections are weak. Weak erections can be an early sign of diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease, and they are treatable. Read our guide to erection problems in young men.
When to see a doctor
See the full list of warning signs in our sexual health guide.
Emergency: get help now
- Severe pain, swelling, bruising or a cracking sound during sex or after using a device: go to hospital the same day.
- An erection that lasts more than 4 hours, especially after any pill or injection: go to hospital.
Prompt review: within days to a few weeks
- A new lump, a curve in the erect penis, or painful erections. These can be signs of Peyronie’s disease, which mainly affects men over 40.
- Lumps, redness, discharge or spreading pain after any injection, filler or oil.
- The penis disappearing into surrounding fat so that peeing or hygiene is difficult.
Routine review
Book an appointment if size worry affects your daily life or relationships, or if you suspect a genuinely very small penis. Micropenis is a rare medical diagnosis made by standard measurement against age-based charts, usually in childhood, and is often linked to hormone problems. If you are worried about a child, see a paediatrician. A urologist, endocrinologist or psychiatrist can help.
How Disha can help
Disha is an AI health coach that chats and calls in Hindi, English and Hinglish. It does not diagnose, prescribe, recommend products or change penis size, and it does not replace a doctor. It can help with the habits that support weight and erection health: sleep, exercise, food, alcohol and stress. The onboarding call of about 15–20 minutes is conducted by Disha, the AI; no human is on the call, and you share only what you choose. Read how Disha coaching works.
This is not medical advice. This page is general education for adults (18+), not a diagnosis or treatment plan. Do not buy or use enlargement pills, oils, injections or devices because of it. In an emergency, call 112; Disha does not provide emergency care.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average penis size?
In a review of up to 15,521 men measured by health professionals, the average erect length was 13.12 cm (just over 5 inches) and the average erect girth was 11.66 cm. The average soft length was 9.16 cm. Soft size changes with cold and stress and is a poor guide to erect size. Most men who worry are in the normal range.
Can any medicine increase penis size?
No medicine has been shown to make an adult penis permanently bigger. Indian rules bar medicines from claiming to improve the size of the sexual organ. Some “enlargement” pills contain hidden erection drugs that make the penis look fuller for a few hours, which is not growth and can be dangerous for men with heart disease.
Can desi remedies or oils make the penis bigger?
No. Oils, creams and herbal pastes cannot reach or change the tissue that sets penis size, and we found no trial showing any desi remedy increases it. Rubbing can cause temporary swelling, and some products burn or irritate genital skin. Some herbal products also contain hidden drugs or heavy metals. Save your money and your skin.
Do penis pumps or extenders work?
Pumps did not lengthen the penis in a 6-month study. Extenders produced a modest gain in one small study without a control group, but only when worn for up to 9 hours a day for 3 months. Both can cause bruising or numbness if misused. Speak to a urologist before trying one, especially if you have a curve or pain.
Does masturbation make the penis smaller?
No. There is no evidence that masturbation changes penis size, and the Indian Psychiatric Society treats fears about masturbation causing weakness as a myth. A penis may look smaller for a while after ejaculation or in the cold, which is normal. Worry about masturbation is common, and a doctor can talk it through without judgement.
Does losing weight make the penis look bigger?
It can. A pad of fat above the penis hides part of the shaft, and with obesity it can bury the penis almost completely. Losing belly fat reduces this pad, so more of the penis shows. Weight loss also helps erections, which makes a difference to erect length. If the penis is buried to the point that peeing is hard, see a doctor.
When should I see a doctor about penis size?
See a doctor if you have a new lump, a curve or painful erections, if problems follow an injection or device, or if worry about size affects your daily life. A very small penis is rare and is usually diagnosed in childhood. Severe pain or swelling during sex, or an erection lasting more than 4 hours, needs hospital care the same day.
