Thyroid diet and lifestyle coaching โ for both hypo and hyper
Your thyroid gland controls your metabolism. In hypothyroidism it makes too little hormone โ tiredness, weight gain, hair fall; in hyperthyroidism it makes too much โ a racing heart, weight loss, anxiety. Your medication is your doctor's call, but food, sleep and stress make a big difference to your day-to-day symptoms.

Common symptoms
These are the signs people most often report on Disha. You will not necessarily have all of them โ and some of them show up in other conditions too.
- Constant tiredness and sluggishness
- Gaining or losing weight for no reason
- Hair fall and dry skin
- Feeling too cold or too hot
- Constipation or irregular periods
What to eat with a thyroid condition
These are starting-point guidelines from Disha's Registered Dietitians โ not a prescription. Your actual plan is built around your reports, your medicines, your routine and the food cooked at home.
- Use iodised salt, nothing else. Your thyroid needs iodine to make hormone. The salt at home should be iodised โ don't shift entirely to rock salt or pink salt, they contain no iodine.
- Cook your goitrogenic vegetables. Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, sarson ka saag โ have them steamed or cooked, not raw. Cooking cuts the goitrogenic effect considerably, so there is no need to give them up altogether.
- Add sources of selenium and zinc. Pumpkin seeds, til, sunflower seeds, eggs, dal and nuts. These minerals play a role in how thyroid hormone works, and they fit easily into an Indian thali.
- Leave a gap between your medicine and tea or milk. Thyroid tablets are taken on an empty stomach, and for at least 30โ60 minutes afterwards no tea, milk, calcium or iron supplements โ they all reduce absorption. Confirm the exact timing with your doctor.

Do I have to stop eating soya with a thyroid condition?
Usually there is no need to stop it completely. Tofu, soya chunks or soya milk in normal quantities are fine for most people โ just leave a few hours between your thyroid medicine and soya, because soya can reduce how well the medicine is absorbed.
Can diet replace thyroid medication?
No. If your thyroid is making too little hormone, diet cannot make up that shortfall โ the medicine is the replacement for it. Diet and lifestyle improve your energy, weight, digestion and mood; they do not take the place of your medicine. Never change the dose on your own.
Why is my weight not coming down with a thyroid problem?
Hypothyroidism slows the metabolism, so progress feels slow โ but it does not stop. First make sure your TSH is under control, then stay consistent with protein, fibre, strength training and sleep. A realistic pace is up to half a kilo a week; expecting more than that only brings frustration.
When should I see a doctor?
If your heartbeat feels fast or irregular, if there is swelling or a lump in your neck, if you have difficulty swallowing, if your weight is rising or falling very fast, or if you are pregnant โ see a doctor without delay. Thyroid doses often need changing during pregnancy. Only a doctor sets your TSH, T3, T4 tests and your medication.
